The U.S. Government’s Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has cancelled the CBP One app which had been offering over 1,600 appointments per day. President Trump signed an executive order this week ordering the app to be shut down.
The CBP One App was positioned as the optimal process for noncitizens noncitizens to access ports of entry where CBP Officers receive advance information for screening and vetting. The app has now been shut down, and all existing appointments cancelled.
The app had allocated the majority of appointments randomly to those who requested an appointment at each port of entry. The remainder were allocated to the requestors with the oldest accounts who have been waiting the longest for an appointment.
The fact sheet posted by the White House said that “through the exercise of his authority, President Trump has further restricted access to the provisions of the immigration laws that would enable any illegal alien involved in an invasion across the southern border of the United States to remain in the United States, such as asylum.”
The TASBIA™ Bottom Line
In October 2020, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) launched the CBP One™ mobile application on the Apple App and Google Play stores. The app was positioned as the mandatory method to apply for asylum.
With the suspension of the app the process for those seeking asylum in the U.S. through the southern border have been suspended under the executive order.
The use of appointment scheduling technology had been viewed as positive trend, and was emulated by other governmental agencies.
