People are wasting hours refreshing websites, hoping an appointment will open up. Some compare it to Soviet-style “queues for cabbage.” Our panel will discuss ideas for fixing this now.
There are lots of horror stories. But not many people are making concrete suggestions – or taking action – to improve things. We’re discussing how to improve the ongoing process for making it easier for the public to find and schedule COVID-19 Testing and Vaccination appointments.
Our panelists include:
- Cimarron Buser – Founder of The Appointment Scheduling & Booking Industry Association (TASBIA). He has over 30 years of industry experience in providing enterprise software, including appointment scheduling and booking technology. Like everyone, he’s frustrated seeing the failure of large-scale appointment systems during COVID-19. During the pandemic he has proposed specific solutions on making Testing and Vaccination appointments easy to find and easy to schedule. His article, “COVID-19 Vaccination Appointment Scheduling: Making it Better” focused on using existing solutions along with Google search. Cimarron was cited in The Boston Globe article “Massachusetts’ vaccine appointment hotline to be a call-back system” and has been referenced as an industry expert on how to use appointment scheduling effectively during the pandemic.
- Tinglong Dai – Associate Professor at the Johns Hopkins University, Carey Business School, specialized in Operations Management & Business Analytics, Marketing, and Business of Health. His recent writings and media coverage address the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, including “How to really fix COVID-19 vaccine appointment scheduling” featured in The Conversation. He has appeared in national and international TV such as CNBC, PBS NewsHour, and Sky News, and have received coverage in ABC News, AP News, Baltimore Sun, Barron’s, Bloomberg, Business Insider, CBC, CBS News, Chicago Tribune, The Conversation, Fast Company, Fortune, Fox Business, Globe and Mail, Harvard Business Review, Les Echos (France), MarketWatch, MedPage Today, Modern Healthcare, Morning Consult, Newsweek, Quartz, S&P Global Market Intelligence, Slate, U.S. News & World Report, USA Today, Washington Post, and Wired, among other media outlets.
- Olivia Adams – built a simpler vaccine site while on maternity leave. Adams had a feeling that she could alleviate some of the stresses that many of the elderly, as well as the friends and relatives trying to help them, were experiencing. As a software developer she took it upon herself to build a simpler website that shows available vaccine appointments in Massachusetts. After hearing complaints about the user-unfriendly system for booking appointments, she decided to take the issue into her own hands, using the skills she already had from her job. Her work on this project produced remarkable results, even with the added responsibility of caring for her newborn son and his two-year-old brother. The 28-year-old mom was able to set up a website where people can find available appointments in Massachusetts all on one page. This effort was highlighted in the The Boston Globe, The Boston Herald, CNN, and many other media outlets.
- Vitor Pamplona – CTO of the Vaccination Program for the PathCheck Foundation, which is a non-profit lead global movement to develop free, open-source, privacy-by-design tools for residents, public health officials, and larger communities to flatten the curve of COVID-19, reduce fear, and prevent a surveillance-state response to the pandemic. The PathCheck solution empowers organizations and communities with a complete digital pandemic response that complements other programs. Vitor is also Founder and CEO of EyeNetra, a company that pairs cutting-edge technology with smartphones.
- Chris Carroll (Moderator) – over 15 years of business-to-business marketing experience, seven of those focused on enterprise scheduling solutions. Chris Carroll will moderate the Room. Outside of leading product marketing initiatives, Chris is an avid video podcaster and YouTube partner, producing shows such as Un-Missed Connections, Mandate Mondays, and Business Over Brews.
